blue diamond

They say there are a 6 million ways to die. No one ever says how you can make money off the dead. Yes, one of the many joys capitalism is that it has not moral base(it really needs one). When the morality checks and balances and no parameters that needs to be crossed, it then gives way that are grossly outrageous. There are some many ways to desecrate the cadaverous. It’s just business never personal with making revenue and clearly this could be an issue for your local Priest to reason with.

1. Algordanza Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, now they took that saying to a whole new level. Algordanza a diamond company whose headquarters in Switzerland and has stores in 19 other countries including the US. They recently invented a way to turn human ashes into blue diamonds. The process takes the 18% of carbon that makes up the human body and separates the carbon from the other elements in the human ashes. These “memorial” diamonds have the same chemical and physical properties as a regular diamond. The average cremation creates 5 pounds of ashes, while the process only needs 1.1 pounds to make a diamond. Contaminants are filtered out in a two-step process and then adding iron and cobalt. The largest diamond you can order is one carat and takes four to six months to complete. Blue one carat diamonds can range from $6,800 to $11,200 dollars.

2. Organ HarvestThe black market literally has blood on their hands from illegally and immorally taking organs from men, women and children. The most incident that got media attention is the story of Kendrick Johnson, a teen in Georgia who reportedly of an accidental death when he was rolled up in a school gym mat. The parents had a second autopsy performed where they found his brain, heart, lungs and liver were taken out and newspaper was stuffed into the corpse. They also determined the cause of death was blunt trauma to the right side of is neck. The sad part is hospitals in New York, Philadelphia and Los Angeles are paying $150,000 dollars for each organ. It seems doctors, hospitals don’t ask and don’t care about the origins of these organs. The organ brokers make the most of the deal, while the donor if still alive gets $5,000 dollars.

Insurance

3. Dead Peasants Insurance– I first heard about the Dead Peasants Insurance or Janitor’s insurance from Michael Moore’s film about capitalism. It’s detestable to think this practice is still being exercised, but it’s capitalism at its finest. For those of you who don’t know what it is by now. “The 2006 law stipulated that companies could not deduct certain expenses of acquiring and holding such a policy from their taxable corporate income unless the covered employee worked at the company during the 12 months prior to his or her death. Before that, employers were able to buy policies under which they could collect death benefits decades after a person’s employment terminated.” Companies like Wal-Mart, Dow Chemical, American Electric Power, Winn-Dixie Store and Camelot Music made millions by cashing on their dead employees. One example of this practice is Amergy Bank made $4.75 million off an employee who they fired, but made money on his death after hearing he had a brain tumor.

4. Tissue Donation– Tissue donation applies to anything that is not a living organ and can be taken from the dead body. Tendons, veins and human bone can be used on future patients in need. $80,000 or more can be made from a single body through tissue donation. One single donor can impact up to 50 people. Tissue companies make over a billion dollars a year. Tissue donations can help with burn victims and also cosmetic surgery such as smoothing wrinkles and plumping up lips. Over 30,000 bodies are donated every year.

5. Unclaimed Money- If you are the rightful heir to a deceased relative unclaimed money and property, then you want to see if you are owed anything. Sites like unclaimed.org and missingmoney.com and great search engines to get access to anything untouched.

grave

6. Grave Robbery– The term rest in peace does not exist in this world for the affluent. Even in death the greedy and those who have no shame will take what they want from the resting places of those buried in the ground. It seems that people high on meth have become the new wave of gravediggers and stealing from sites associated with the civil war and Native Americans. They look for anything of value to feed their habit. This is a new low, even for meth heads. Depending on the artifacts found and sold they can be anywhere from $500 to thousands of dollars.

7. Cannibal Restaurant in Nigeria– You’ve heard of Tiger testicle soup? Maybe not, well how about human heads wrapped in cellophane for the for the purpose to be eaten. Yup, a restaurant was closed down when they uncovered a hotel restaurant was serving human flesh and even had roasted human head on the menu. A lump of human meat was sold at N700 which converts into $60 US dollars according to google. This is really sick stuff man.

Update-5/20/2015

8. Leather Made from Human Skin-If you ever looked at someone’s handbag or shoes and thought it was a great accessory, you may want to ask them where they got it. Not just to be nosy so you can buy it yourself, but to make sure it’s not made from human skin. One such company called HumanLeather.co.uk says they make items from real human skin and sell them to a strict affluent clientele. The site claims this is legal and they get their skin from recently deceased cadavers that were sold to them by the deceased family for compensation. Unfortunately, this is not a new phenomenon and dates back to the 17th century and maybe earlier. For example the French used to bound their books in human skin and made slippers from them as well. One article in the Mercury in 1888 claims a doctor only used African skin to make his shoes, because of he says they were the most pliable and enduring. Fast forward to today and the practice is still going strong to today. So how much for some of the items offered: Wallet-$14,000, Belt-$15,750, Shoes-$27,000. This is the world we live in.

It’s a truly sick world we live in where the voiceless are used for profit and their families are left out. Are we in such economic despair that we sacrifice our meritorious values and replace them with hollow dividends and revenue streams where you cash in by using cadavers as legal tender. These atrocious acts mark a declination in any virtuous trait that I once thought was incorruptible. I was truly mistaken.

6/21/16 –Update

In addition to the other listings I made I found out another example of how people are worth more dead than alive. In particularly people of dark skinned color. Melanin is a determining factor in creating skin color in humans and also can be used for radiation protection, anti-oxidants, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Melanin can be found in every organ of the human body, and darker skinned people have more melanin than light skinned or Caucasians.

A little known fact about melanin is that it is the most expensive material on earth, costing $350 dollars a gram. “Many scientific studies have verified that melanin has unique characteristics for a wide range of applications, especially in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and battery technology sectors which have growing global demand,” said Kenneth Nealson, Ph.D., vice president of research at River Road Research.

Many African-Americans, Africans and people with darker skinned tint are weary about this. When you do the math of adding the grams of an average dark skinned male weighing about 150 lbs. is worth 28 million dollars roughly. With this kind of incentive, fearful conspiracy theorists are putting together accusations that the reason why African Americans are dying at rates higher than other races can partly be due to the worth of their melanated skin.

It Love healthseems that love is overrated. Excuse me, the portrayal of love on tv, movies and online is overrated. There’s a million movies about the story of two young lovers finding fate and themselves and then fighting all the odds to become star crossed lovers. It’s the tale of love conquers all, but it only happens when you’re young and have no responsibilities. The other side are the blundering mid 30’s or 40’s age when the kids are hormone raging teens, your job has become mundane drudgery and your parents seem to be enjoying their golden age. Some how the characters are stuck in the middle, where the love well is drying up and they re-evaluate their love, but not until temptation, either from another person or life changing event happens. Out of both types of romance movies, which one is the one that makes it through?

Oddly enough, according to Steinberg’s Triangular Love Theory, and my own interpretation of those types of movies, I would say the middle aged couple that hit a lull has a better chance than the hopelessly madly in love that conquers all types. Why?….Well, let’s be honest with ourselves if you’ve been in those fiery type of romances, it’s just like the movies. Excitement, sex, enjoyment, sex, drunken nights, sex, recklessness and more sex. These types of relationships fit into the category of “Romantic Love, ” according to Steinberg. To put it simply, there’s a lot of passion and even intimacy, but it lacks commitment which Consummate Love contains intimacy, passion and commitment. Isn’t the fun part, though finding love and learning the person? Take for existence Titanic, would you have liked the story any different if you saw that Leonardo’s character made it out alive and twenty years later they’re arguing about mortgage payments and why he doesn’t do the same things he used when they first met?

Steinberg’s Triangular Theory of Love has six types of love: Companionate Love-This has intimacy and commitment, but no passion. Commitment-Empty Love, commitment alone. Fatuous Love-Passion and Commitment, but no intimacy. Passion-Infatuation, passion alone. Romantic Love-Intimacy and Passion, but no commitment. Intimacy-Liking, intimacy alone. Consummate as I talked about earlier is the sum of all of them equally. Too often times I see people trying to find love and it seems they have more lust for the person then an actual connection and when the fantasy fades and the girl or boy no longer encaptures what they mislead themselves to think the fun is over and the problems usually occur.

Too many times the benefits of love are overlooked and not mentioned. We can promote sex on the radio as early as the sunrise, but mentioning love somehow seems uncool and talked down about, like it’s some deviant behavior. There are some health benefits of finding love and maintaining a healthy love life. Love has been said to increase your immune system, help keep the pounds off if you exercise with your loved one, lower mortality rates for happy couples, that healthy glow due to less acne causing cortisol from lower stress levels when in love. Cardiovascular health is an added benefit from love as well as holding someone’s hand, can actually decrease the feelings of pain. Having sex once a week can increase estrogen levels and regulate menstrual cycles for women. Last, couples that are deep in love actually have more dopamine brain activity which can be associated with optimism, energy and a sense of well-being.

Love is so powerful, that on a physiological level seeing an attractive face activates the same part of the brain that reacts from painkillers, the opioid system. Being in love makes the heart grow fonder, or least makes the blood flow according to MRI scans that show the nucleus accumbens region has increased blood flow during times of love. A drop in serotonin, maybe an explanation why new lovers sometimes only seem to concentrate on each other and ignore the other person’s faults. When couples are in love for a little while to create the attachment phase. During this phase oxytocin and vasopressin spread throughout the brain and create feelings of well-being and security.

With all these facts about the health benefits and senses of well-being, then why isn’t America more proactive about promoting falling and maintaining love lasting relationships? I know finding true love is hard, but the alternative is a loveless society.

Eugenics

A few months ago I read an article about the increasing number of African-American abortions in NYC. In 2012 there were actually more black babies killed from abortion than there were born. Honestly, when I read the article I thought, “That’s crazy!”, but after a day or so I forgot about the article and went about life without too much concern about it. I would say… Well, if a woman chooses to have an abortion, why not. The issue is the 31,328 babies aborted and 24,758 babies born. The number represents 42.4% of all the abortions in NYC according to the NYC Department of Mental Health and Hygiene. 6.570 more abortions than live births than for black babies.  Hispanic women came in second with 22,917  abortions, which makes up 31% of total abortions in NYC. That’s 73% of abortions in NYC in 2012 were either Black or Hispanic.

Eugenics-

Ever since high school, I remember standing up for a women’s right to choose on the issue of having a baby. I always saw those, who say they are pro-life as cruel and forcefully holding their views and judgments on others. Now, I really don’t care when life begins at what stage of pregnancy, I still firmly believe in a woman’s right to make decisions over her own body. Where it gets into deeper waters for me is if having an abortion is something that is subjected subconsciously into minorities more than other races by society as a whole. Having a baby is deemed socially unacceptable if you’re a single minority female.

A more sinister plot behind telling minority women not to have babies is the theory of Eugenics. The study of or belief in the possibility of improving the qualities ofthe human species or a human population, especially by such meansas discouraging reproduction by persons having genetic defects orpresumed to have inheritable undesirable traits (negative eugenics)or encouraging reproduction by persons presumed to have inheritabledesirable traits (positive eugenics). This idea was created by Francis Galton, who is the half cousin of Charles Darwin. He came up with the concept of Eugenics to cleanse the gene pool of the impure. The insane, mentally unstable, handicapped and the racially superior groups he called Nordic Race or Aryan race.

Now if we could fast forward from the beginning of Eugenics to know ya’ll a devised plot to eliminate, destroy the black and other minorities through what looks like to me is volunteer genocide. When you look at the figures I posted in the first paragraph you see clearly those figures are not making sense. The term used for African genocide is Maafa  in I saw a film that showed a clear link from planned parenthood to Eugenics. After watching the film I learned about the calculated killings of blacks and sterilization of minority women for population control purposes. Blacks and Hispanics were seen as inferior compared to the Nordic Race and whites should never intermingle with them or their children will share these inferior traits.

According to Black Genocide.org there have been 16 million abortions from 1973 to present day. This outnumbers death in the black community by AIDS, violent crimes, Cancer, Accidents and Heart Disease combined! Blacks are only 13% of the population, but underwent 36% of all abortions in the US. About 1,876 abortions per day in the US come from black women. Those 16 million more lives added to our current 36 million would tally up to 52 million people in our current economy. This would have given the black community an enormous boost in economical, financial and social power at our disposal, which is exactly what some people do not want happening.

Not On Our Side-

I would’ve not believed this plot to weaken our race, but if you look at it in terms of numbers and stats it puts things into simplicity. 77% of the US population are Whites, 13% are Blacks, 16% are Latino. Blacks and Hispanics are the only racial group that is close seconds to the number of whites in this country. Ironically, they are also the groups who share the most abortions in this country. Now, this is not some sort of conspiracy theory that they have more abortions. The part that is mind-boggling to me is the governments outcry for more babies to be born to help keep programs like social security and other federally assisted programs afloat. The US birth rate has hit a record low, according to the US News and World Report. Women in higher socioeconomic classes and top positions are having less babies and focusing more on their careers. Married woman are also having less babies as well. It seems more newlyweds that are bogged down by debt of school loans, mortgages, car payments and other monthly bills as having issues trying to keep up with the traditional get married, get a house , have a family ideology as their parents and grandparents. In fact, more couples are holding off marriages and children to focus on other things.

In other countries like Japan, Germany, Australia, Russia and Taiwan they are also seeing drops in the birth rate as well. One solution in the US for the birth rate problem and it only applies to the affluent is having a surrogate mother. These mothers are implanted with the donor’s egg and another’s sperm. Surrogacy is very pricey and can cost up to hundreds of thousands of dollars and has a moderate chance of rejection by the surrogate’s body. In one article a procedure had to be done multiple times before the baby was able to handle the pregnancy. Still, according to SART in 2011 only 1,593 babies born were from surrogates.

It just feels like if the birth rate is such a problem in America and other countries and we truly wanted to sustain our economy with more children to become more workers and producers in the future, then we would give some more incentive for minority women to have babies since these are the groups that more likely to have abortions. I truly believe it is not the intentions of the US or any other government to promote keeping their babies since they are not of Aryan descent. Yes, racism is still alive and well and not going anywhere.

good_vs_evil

A few years ago I had a conversation at works with some co-workers. We would often have discussions that felt like a forum when there was downtime at the job. Our topics would range from religion to reality tv and so on. One conversation in particular we talked about was the idea that human society as a whole is becoming more evil than we have in the past. The question became paradoxical when one person made the argument that society is just as evil as it has always been, but since the internet and the world became digital, we have been able to transport information in a split second. The world is becoming more diaphanous and reflects our greatest and worst qualities within us.

Do we have free will to choose good vs evil?

Human choice has been something debated by philosophers and scientists since the times of the ancient Egypt. Is the idea of freedom and free will an illusion. Nothing more than an ideological equalivalent to a visual hologram. Cosmological determinism which is an ideal that everything is predetermined and predicted makes the notion of free will improbable. Neuroscientists made a discovery that our brains make our decisions far before we are actually conscious of them. This term called “Bereitschaftpotential” which means readiness potential describes a subfield the brain goes into prior to conscious awareness.

Scientists Kornhuber and Deecke’s used EEG scans on research participants. They found that during a test where the subjects were asked to move their fingers. Prior to the voluntary movement the motor cortex showed a negative slow potential shift right before. Benjamin Libet also ran experiments in the 1980’s that further reaffirmed the findings from Kornhuber and Deecke. This time the participants would watch a clock with a dot circling around it. Data showed that .35 seconds before conscious awareness the readiness potential began. He concluded that as far as the initiation of our movements, there is no free will. This can be “vetoed” at the last-minute he also noted. He also believed that the anterior cingulate motor areas of the brain, which allows us to focus and execute self-initiated actions and self instigated movements.

Neuroscientists are now using fMRI and implanted electrodes to study this phenomenon. Participants were asked to go into an fMRI scanner and then press a button with their right or left index finger. They had to remember what letter appeared on the screen the moment they pressed the button. What they found was that the BP occurred one second prior to the conscious awareness and sometimes up to ten seconds before. “The first thought we had ‘we have to check if this is real.’ We came up with more sanity checks than I’ve ever seen in any other study before.” Another test actually used implants of electrodes into a person’s brain to record the activity of the individuals neutrons. He found that the neurons lit up 1.5 seconds prior to any conscious awareness. They used this to give a prediction of the person’s actions with 80% sometimes 90% accuracy. The conclusion became that the neuronal assemblies, cross a threshold and that the medial frontal cortex can determine these decisions before a person is even aware of it.

The Mind of a Killer

Mass shootings in this country have become problematic in our society. It seems that the more we find out about mental illness and the connection between the pestilence of these types of killings it has become more evident that evil is tangible in our way of life. In the last paragraph I talked about the absence of free will and the scientific analysis of the brain that pre-determines our actions. Could this in turn mean that out sociopaths/psychopaths are also commanded by some internal brain pattern.

In an article in Time magazine examining the minds of killers one investigator found that a man who killed 17 people and murdered and wounded 32 had a tumor and a vascular malformation pressing against his amygdala which is the region of the brain that controls emotion. A schoolteacher developed a sick compulsion for child pornography and began making advances towards his stepdaughter. He got arrested and then flunked out of a 12 step course, but when he went to the ER for a terrible headache and other neurological symptoms the doctors discovered an egg sized tumor on his right oribitofrontal cortex which controls decision-making. When the tumor was removed the urges stop, but the urges came back along with the re-growth of another tumor.

One experiment that was done on 96 male felons to study their impulse control and brain function. The test consisted of a fMRI scanner on them while they performed pressing a button when they saw the letter X,but had to refrain when they saw the letter K. The letter X was designed to appear over 84% of the time, which led to overclicking by the inmates who confused to the two letters. The anterior cingulate cortex(ACC) is the region of the brain that controls impulses. In turn that test found that those who did bad on the test had lower levels of ACC than those who scored higher. The correlation between the ones with lower ACC is that when the inmates were released back into society the ones with lower levels had been likely to be re-arrested four times more.

Another example of babies 6 monthsold born with a condition called cavum septum pellucidum which is a small gap in the forward left and right regions of the brain were more likely to develop behavioral disorders and exhibit criminal behavior. The question for us then becomes if someone is biological influenced to become a killer are they held accountable for the actions they committed. Dr Keihl’s who also studied prisoners in two high security facilities found that psychopath’s brains had low levels of density in the paralimbic system which is responsible for processing emotion. This connections results in impulsive personalities and show little evidence of feeling guilt, remorse of empathy.

A gene that has been studied seems to hold some answers whether evil is hereditary or not. The MAO-A (Warrior gene)gene seems to be the key to the question if evil within us and can it be passed down. A study done on Danish men found that identical twins when one had a criminal record the other twin had a 50% chance to have to also have a criminal record themselves. If there were non-identical twins they were 15-30% more likely to exhibit criminal behavior than an average Danish male. In the same scope children of criminal parents were more likely to become criminals even if the children were adopted and the foster parents were law biding citizens.

Can the Good turn Bad?

In the summer of 1971 there was an experiment where nine students volunteered for a two-week paid study program in Stanford County Prison. The students were blindfolded, stripped naked, sprayed with powder and given short smocks and flip-flops, hair was cut and they were given a number instead of a name. They were all tested and passed to be emotionally and physically competent. Dr. Zimbardo who was a psychologist played a warden in the prison. Twelve more volunteers were given uniforms and mirrored sunglasses and were given the task to enforce the prison rules. The inmates had to be quiet during meals and rest periods.

The guards tormented the inmates, waking them up at to recite numbers they had been assigned, playing naked leap frogging with other inmates. If inmates rebelled they were punished with push-ups and even solitary confinement. Some of the guards fell in line with these cruelties while other guards were clearly the aggressors and thought of more and more ways to torture the inmates. The prisoners themselves seemed the most complacent and obeyed their orders with little resistance.

The experiment was shut down after 6 days when the lines were too blurred for the “guards” to make moral and ethical decisions for themselves and seemed to be apart of a single ispeity. The prisons became violent and some became docile and accepting of their prisoner indicative role. Dr. Zimbardo’s experiment failed the ideal argument that good people can maintain their moral high-ground even in a virulent environment.  So my question now can good people given the wrong conditions turn themselves into immoral corrupted individuals.

Religion Explains the Rise of Evil

One explanation of the more and more accumulating evidence of evil is the argument that we are approaching the “Last Days.” In Christian culture describe the last days when the sinners of the earth will be judged. The rejection of word as one article puts it is the reason why the world is heading on a one way train to armageddon.

Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator–who is forever praised. Amen. Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion. Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them. [Romans 1:24-32]

When I shall send upon them the evil arrows of famine, which shall be for their destruction, and which I will send to destroy you: and I will increase the famine upon you, and will break your staff of bread: So will I send upon you famine and evil beasts, and they shall bereave thee; and pestilence and blood shall pass through thee; and I will bring the sword upon thee. I the LORD have spoken it. –Exekiel 5:16-17

“And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. – Revelation 18:2

14-year-old Marcy Conrad of Milpitas, California, had been raped, strangled to death, and left lying off the road in the hills outside of town. According to the local paper, at least 13 students went out to look at her body. One girl picked up the murdered girl’s jeans, cut off a patch, and threw the jeans down along the side of the road. One student tried to cover the body with leaves. Another took his eight-year-old brother along to see the body. One boy went twice. Those who saw the body went back to class or to the pinball arcade. One went home to bed. Another student said he only cared about collecting the marijuana cigarette he had won on a bet that the body was real. As the newspaper reported: “The shock is the shock of the of the encounter with icy indifference, the indifference of the kids in the first instance, but much more importantly, of the culture that produced them… The depersonalization did not begin yesterday; it is not unique to this moment, yet it seems more complete – and they seem more alienated and isolated – than we have ever known before.

Public order has disappeared in “the new South Africa.” Crime is rampant. In Cape Town, a serious crime occurs every 17 seconds. Police have 1,227,047 unsolved cases under review, according to Crime Investigation Services divisional chief Johan le Rous. It is increasingly dangerous in South Africa to own a nice car since roving gangs of unemployed thugs surround nice cars at intersections, drag the driver and passengers out, beat them brutally, then drive off with the car – just for a wild “joy ride” in which the car is vandalized or wrecked.

“Since virtually all perverted behavior people engage in is now categorized under “natural behavior,” a door is now opened for more wicked sins. Just thirty years ago we would have been appalled, even outraged, by the decadence and debauchery that daily fills our streets, TV shows, movie screens, music and art, video games, businesses, and political bodies. But today we rarely give it a second thought. In fact, we often give it our approval, or a least fail to speak out against it. We have gotten used to it all, even though it is not a good thing to get used to. ”

“As a society, we have gotten used to illicit sexual relationships, adolescent promiscuity, abortion, cheating, lying, stealing, prostitution, rape, divorce, and even murder. We have gotten used to financial mismanagement on both civil and personal levels. We haveaccepted political corruption. We have rejected personal and social responsibility and learned to blame anyone or anything else for our problems and failures. We have traded in our infinitely valued divine image for a nickel-plated pagan shrine erected in honor of self-interest, immorality, and social apathy. The American ideal today is me first to do what I want, when I want, to whom I want, regardless of who or what it may hurt. These are the signs of a society gone wrong.”

I think the author nailed it one the head with this one. I really didn’t want to change any wording around. This isn’t the first time though Christians have cried out these are the last days and the sinners will pay for their wrongdoings in pestilence proportions. Truthfully was supposed to come by the turn of the century, then again Y2k was supposed to end everything as we know, then the Mayans prophecized Dec. 21, 2012 was the day the stars lined up and the Apocalypse was supposed to come down. I see the times are getting worse, but I have a hard time accepting this is biblical and we are heading for judgment. Just in case though a quick prayer………….Amen lol

child labor

I saw a report on the Jon Stewart “The Daily Show” about child workers on a Tobacco farm. As all interviews with the show it was humorous and raised the question why is this allowed to be in the US. It started me on a research project to find other industries if any that allow children under the legal age to work that do not have to abide by the child labor laws of this country. Here are some of the industries that I have found.

Family Businesses – If you work for you parents of other family members then you don’t have to obey the same laws for child labor. This can be harmful since working 20 hours a week for an underage minor may not apply to some places. Also family businesses don’t have to offer health care services like other businesses have to offer now. They don’t have to pay social security tax, federal unemployment tax, or medicare tax on the wages of its minor family members. The Fair Labor Standards Act also doesn’t mean anything to family businesses.

Other Occupations- The FLSA doesn’t apply for children who work in the entertainment industry such as performers in radio, television, and theater. Children under the age of 14 can work in this industry and also deliver newspapers, babysit or work at home.

Agriculture Farming In some state girls and boys as young as twelve years old can work in the industry of agriculture picking fruits and vegetables. I thought the days of having children working on the farm was over, but in some states like Hawaii children can pick a coffee as young as 10 years old. To add onto this 10 state and the Federal gov’t set no cap on the number of hours per day and per week children can work on the farm. They are also paid $4.25 an hour for the first 90 days of employment, but hand-harvesters of all ages are paid by the numbers of containers filled. Teens ages 15-17 working on farms were four times more likely to die on the job rather than teens who worked in other industries according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. According to the Missouri director of Labor Standards there used to be random inspections to make sure the laws were upheld. Now inspections only occur after a complaint is raised.

Tobacco Farming- Can an 11-year-old work in the US? In most places the answer is an obvious nobut in Snow Hill, North Carolina Jessica Rodriguez spent five summer six days a week working on a tobacco farm. “It was hard. It was definitely hard,” she remembers. “We had a good boss lady — she bought us lunch every day. But remember, you’re sitting there eating lunch with tobacco gum all over your hands.” They worked 12 hour days from 6am or 7am to 6pm and 7pm at night. They work under harsh conditions and when researchers interviewed 141 of the children between the ages of 7 through 17 and found that almost 75% of them reported symptoms such as vomiting, nauseaheadachedizziness, skin rashes and burning eyes. They also suffer from acute nicotine poisoning, green tobacco sickness or GTS. “About half the kids we interviewed said they saw tractors come through the fields where they were working, or nearby fields, spraying pesticides,” Wurth said. “And the children said they could smell and taste and feel the chemical spray as it drifted toward them.”

U.S. Labor laws, she says, do not protect these kids.

According to the report:

— Children as young as 12 can work unlimited hours on any size farm as long as they have a parent’s permission.

— Children of any age can work in any job on a farm owned by their parents.

— There is no minimum age for children to work on small farms.

— At 16, children working on farms can do jobs considered hazardous by the Department of Labor. Children working outside agriculture must be at least 18 to do hazardous work.

The Federal Youth Employment Laws in Farm Jobs, while setting standards for youth employment in agriculture, does not specifically address tobacco farms. But the Department of Labor released a statement addressing the Human Rights Watch report:

A 16-year-old worker harvests tobacco on a farm in Kentucky.
A 16-year-old worker harvests tobacco on a farm in Kentucky.

“Our job at the Department of Labor is to ensure that agricultural employers keep their workers, regardless of age, safe on the job, housed in safe and sanitary residential facilities, and pay them their legally-required wages,” the government agency said. “The Department especially takes seriously its role in ensuring that employers operate in compliance with all appropriate laws and rules with respect to young workers.”

“We’ve concluded that any tasks where kids come into direct contact with tobacco plants or dried tobacco leaves pose hazards to their health,” Wurth said. “We want companies to make clear that kids cannot work in jobs where they are exposed to these dangers and then to communicate this to the growers and their supply chains to make sure the growers know these rules and follow them.”

The Obama administration tried to make changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, but they were met with fierce opposition by ranchers, farmers and farm-state legislators. Under pressure they withdrew their proposals and promised not to bring them up again until after Obama’s second term.  Some congressmen like Lucille Roybal-Allard and other representatives want to reintroduce the CARE Act, which would prohibit children under 14 from working. It would also the age to 18 yrs old for legally working on a farm and ban 17 dangerous tasks from being performed. “For over a decade, we’ve been trying to spread the word that a 12-year-old can work unlimited hours as long as school is not in session, under harsh conditions in the fields — and nobody seems to care,”.

Human Rights Watch shared its report with 10 companies that buy tobacco grown in the United States.

“Nine of the 10 companies responded and all are concerned about child labor, but none of them have policies that specifically protect children from the hazards we identified in our research,” Wurth said.

For many parents and other authority figures there is a long debate over whether children should or should not be beaten as a form of discipline. The question is also does the child benefit in the long run? For my wife and I we do differ in our parenting approach about this issue. I really don’t see the bad side to spanking or hitting a child as long as it’s not excessive and restrained and the child is made aware of why you did what you did. My mother took the same approach with me, if I did something bad I would get a spanking and then afterwards she would sit me down(if I could sit) and explain to me why I was disciplined the way I was. My wife on the other hand was not brought with her parents spanking her so to her hitting is just another form of child abuse she doesn’t condone. I wanted to see what the experts say and if there are other ways that have been proven affective to discipline a child.

The Argument for-

One stat I found interesting is that 90% of parents say they beat or at least have hit their child even though they say they don’t want to. One thing I can say is the negative phantasm is that if you even say YES I hit my child when they act up it’s like you admitted that you worship the devil and those who you know see you as a archfiend of terror instead of a caring nurturing parent. Also people don’t want to admit that they beat their children, because their afraid social services will take their child away or make surprise visits. While the population of parents who think spanking is necessary fell from 94 to 70% over 90% admit to actually spanking their children.Today’s do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do attitude toward spanking is nothing short of disingenuous, says the Rev. Eugene Rivers, a Boston-based activist who admits his own views on corporal punishment have evolved. “Spanking is yet another serious issue for which we’ve allowed ourselves to set different standards for what we claim we believe,” he says. “People are saying: ‘We’re modern now. We’re smarter now. We don’t believe in this.’ But behind closed doors, they still do it.”

A psychologist and professor at Michigan’s Calvin College Marjorie Gunnoe looked at surveys of over 200 teenagers and found that in those who have been spanked between the ages of 2- 6 years old performed slightly better academically and got along better with peers than those children who were not spanked. In 2007 Kathleen Wolf that would have made Massachusetts the first state to ban spanking at home. The bill died due to public outrage and resistance from citizens advocate for the right for personal privacy and to use whatever disciplinary tactics that are legal. Another college professor studied data on 11,000 families and found that 89% of the black parents spanked their kids, which is more than any other racial group that was studied. Alvin Poussaint a professor of psychiatry in African-American studies feels this spanking culture has deep roots in slavery.“It is ingrained in so many black people to believe that without physical force, their children will not turn out right,” . The same study showed that 80% of Hispanics, 79% of whites and 73% of Asian Americans spank their kids.

The Argument Against

An article published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal states a new analysis that used 20 years of research pointing to the evidence that spanking children on a long-term basis can disrupt long-term development. “We find children who are physically punished get more aggressive over time and those who are not physically punished get less aggressive over time,” says Joan Durrant, the article’s lead author and a child clinical psychologist and professor of family social sciences at the University of Manitoba. They go on to say that only 80 studies out of the thousands that have been researched show the effects of physical abuse in a positive light.

They go on to say that children that are spanked may feel depressed and devalued and their sense of self-worth may suffer. Plus punishments that use spanking or other forms of physical discipline may end up backfiring because it may encourage lying in order to avoid punishment. There have been links to physical punishment and mental health problems, alcohol and drug abuse, depression and anxiety. There is neuroimaging evidence that suggests that physical punishment may alter parts of the brain that we rely on for IQ tests, likelihood of substance abuse, emotion and stress regulation.

In 1979 Sweden was the first of 32 countries to outlaw physical discipline of children which includes, Europe, Costa Rica, Israel, Tunisia and Kenya to name a few of them.

Neither the U.S. nor Canada has gotten on board. “Whenever I mention the law, there is an assumption that this is government telling me how to raise my child,” says Durrant. “[But in Sweden] they see it as a way to make sure children get the best start possible in life.” In Sweden new parents are given support groups and information about developmental stages instead of using spanking as a form of discipline. “When children see someone resolve conflict with aggression, they are more likely to learn that behavior,” says Durrant. “Two-year-olds are the most aggressive people in the world. They don’t understand the impact of their behavior, and they can’t inhibit themselves. So the more a child sees someone resolving conflict with aggression, the more aggressive they become.”

Alternatives to Spanking-

For those of you who are not into spanking at all and your among the 10% who have never spanked your child or even if you want another way to discipline your child then you may want to take notes. Among the most popular ideas is called “Time Out” in which you isolate the child in a safe area of the house or home. Typically the child is to remain cut off for each minute of age, example, my oldest is four years old, so I have tried time outs before and she remains in time out for four minutes. Another way is to let them know their actions have consequences. The hard part about this one is if you have young children, they may not understand what they did was wrong or they may not understand your explanation. One way they say that is effective is to custom fit the solution to your child. For a child who is always losing something may need a reminder system in place to help them. Also talking to your pediatrician may help tailor your discipline tactic to your child and what your comfortable with.

Other methods of discipline include the Incompatible Alternative Principle which gives the child something to do instead of misbehaving. For example “Help me pick out what cereal you want” while grocery shopping or help me with picking out these oranges. Talk about the child positively to others is another tactic, honestly parents should be doing this anyway!!! The Positive Closure Principle at the end of the day remind the child that they are special and loved. Help them find something special about the day that is good and what the next day lies ahead. The one I have used in the past and works for me is the “Eye Level Principle” which is when you get down to the child’s eye level and speak to them softly. I use more of a stern voice, but the tactic is the same.

One thing I thought about someone brought to my attention is using some of the same drills and discipline tactics that the military and other authority enforcements use. No I don’t mean do one hundred push ups or stand in the rain and do drills like you see in the movies, but a conversation I had with a co-worker who had a military backward says for her children she had one of them crouch on their knees while holding a piece of paper in their hand for a limited amount of time. While this doesn’t seem all to bad a punishment you have to think that the child legs will get tired and the piece of paper that ways less than a gram will feel like a 60lbs. weight on each arm after period of time. She enforces this type of discipline all while explaining to them why what they did is wrong and that the behavior is not acceptable.

One form of alternative discipline that has not been discussed is boot camp. When the concept was introduced in the 90’s the harsh element of corporal punishment, lack of training and  lack of setting real life goals for themselves. One thing to look for is making sure whatever program you choose that the staff is properly trained and is not understaffed. If so they may end hiring someone off the street that is not qualified. Look to see if the program offers individual, group and family therapy so it can help teenagers deal with trauma and deal with feelings in a healthy manner. See if the program offers problem-solving skills, coping skills and improves social skills. Involving the parents helps understand the program and with gaining insight to what the child is learning can help prolong the effects after the boot camp has ended. Programs that consult with parents are much more likely to succeed. See if the program uses positive discipline which includes logical consequences and reward systems. If the program uses fear the effects are not likely to be long-lasting or healthy for your child.
